Our mission is to rescue, care for, and rehabilitate unwanted, abused, and neglected herding breeds, concentrating on Australian Cattle Dogs and Border Collies. Our focus is on the permanent placement of these dogs into appropriate, loving homes, and informing the public about the special nature and needs of herding breeds. If you are contacting us to inquire about a specific dog available for adoption, we will respond to your inquiry within 24 hours, if not sooner. To all groups and individuals seeking rescue for their dogs: HITTGV is currently on a temporary hiatus from accepting new dogs into our rescue. We are a very small rescue operated solely by a handful of volunteers. We only take in a small number of dogs at a time. HITTGV does not have a central housing facility for our dogs. The number of fosters we have determines the number of dogs we can rescue. Unfortunately, there is an enormous and growing number of animals needing rescue, and few foster homes. We have been barraged by requests to take in herding breed dogs, and must assess whether and how to accommodate the increasing requests we are receiving. There has been just too much work for us to continue at the current rate, under our current organizational structure. We need to focus on the care and adoption of dogs we currently have, and work on improving our procedures for rescue. We care too much about these dogs to perform rescue poorly. Until we work out a better internal system, that will allow us to continue this work responsibly and reliably over the long term, we very regretfully are temporarily (i.e. until further notice) not accepting more dogs into our rescue. Thank you for your understanding. If you are seeking rescue for a herding breed/mix dog, or are an individual who would like to adopt a rescue dog not on our list, please see the rescues listed on our Rescue Resources page.
