Herd It Through The Grapevine

Herding Dog Rescue

CEDAR

Cedar is a sweet natured, shy, and sensitive 8 month old cattle dog, who weighs 33 lbs. She is an extremely loving, moderate energy, quiet and cuddly girl. She loves to lay in her foster mom’s lap and sleep next to her on the bed.

Due to her lack of exposure to anything outside of her original yard, before arriving at her current foster home at 8 months old, Cedar has no experience with most situations and is extremely cautious when exposed to new things for the first time. She is very timid when meeting new people, especially men and children. Cedar has been timid around the toddler in her foster home. She is improving, and now will sometimes go up to the toddler and give him a kiss. She was initially very afraid of her foster dad. After a few weeks, she is much better with him, but is still cautious when he stretches his hand in her direction, or if he wears a baseball hat.

As a cattle dog, she wants to please her person, but is constantly afraid that she may be in trouble for something. She becomes extremely afraid when there is any yelling or voices are raised. Sudden moves or loud noises will also send her running. In the predictability of her current foster home situation, she is slowly realizing that she is safe and becoming a bit more brave.

Cedar meets other dogs very well. She is just beginning to learn how to be a dog, and would do best in a household with another dog to learn from. She is figuring out what dog toys are and how to play with them. Cedar is not interested in chasing balls. Her strongest cattle dog trait is her super velcro nature. The activities Cedar does enjoy are, playing with her older sister and and another 18 month old cattle dog at her home, and just being with her person (foster mom). Cedar is generally a quiet girl. The only time she will make sounds is when she is excitedly playing with another dog. This pup has the unique tendency of actually smiling. Most people may initially think she is snarling, as she lifts her lips and shows her front teeth, however she does it while she is wagging and wiggling happily, playing with other dogs. Cedar is NOT mouthy or nippy, and has NOT shown any strong herding tendencies. She also does not guard her food or any resources at all. We have not seen her with a cat, but suspect she would ignore them.

We feel sure that Cedar and her sister had been outside only dogs, before coming to their foster home. Cedar is unsure of what leash walking means and is only beginning to walk voluntarily on leash. If off leash, she will follow you and be right at your side. She is doing well with her potty training, but it’s a work in progress. This pup is beginning to wake up her foster mom at night to let her know that she needs to go out. If she isn’t let out at that time, she may have an accident in the house. Both Cedar and her sister, love being inside the house, and will not go outside unless their foster mom goes out with them. Once outside, they will follow her around and play with the other dog. If her person leaves the house, she will wait quietly at the door for her return. Cedar does NOT have separation anxiety, but would not do well in a situation where she was left alone for most of the day. She is not crate trained and does not like going into a crate.

She probably was never in a car before. Cedar is fearful of getting into a vehicle, and will get motion sickness on long rides. Her foster mom is working with her, and learning to ride in a vehicle is a work in progress.

Cedar is super sweet and wants to cuddle and be with her own person more than anything. She received no socialization, training or exposure to new experiences prior to being rescued. For her, everything is new and scary, and she needs time to process and adjust to anything new. We are seeking adopters who have the time, patience and ability to gradually expose her to new things, build her confidence, and continue the work her fosters have begun, and to train and teach her rules, manners, and basic obedience commands.

If you are interested in meeting Cedar, we ask that you first complete our adoption questionnaire (online form or download a hard copy), which is the first step of our pre-adoption process. At our website (hittgv.org), please click on the Adopt tab near the top of the page, and scroll down to find the online Adoption Form.
